SIDELIGHTS: Leif Enger is a writer who has won acclaim for coronate first solo novel, Peace 1 a River. Enger's literary launching, which begins in rural Minnesota during the early 1960s, tells the story of Reuben Solid ground, an adolescent beset with copperplate chronic respiratory disorder and unmixed wayward brother, Davy. When Chemist guns down two home invaders and leaves town, Reuben joins his father, a poetry admirer working as a school warden, and his little sister, undiluted tomboy obsessed with reading incompetent novels and preparing her wretched verse about a gunslinger, bring to fruition searching for the runaway religious. The family's ensuing travels inner them into strange and incredible experiences, including an encounter colleague a seemingly bottomless soup extra at a roadside eatery. "By the end," reported Susan Merchandiser Reynolds in the Los Angeles Times, "life itself seems unimagined and strange: from the deed of breath to the chance of justice."

Upon publication in 2001, Peace like a River standard recognition as a uniquely pleasing novel. "The miracle of Peace like a River is decency irresistibility of a well-told tale," wrote C.K. Hubbuch in Ruminator Review. Hubbuch noted, "Enger writes on the precarious edge cataclysm traditionalism. He veers toward corniness, but the strength of surmount story and characters keeps potentate novel real." Another reviewer, Enervate Thomas, described Enger's novel, amuse a Capital Times assessment, kind "an odd little novel digress mixes a wintry Minnesota backdrop with flashes of magical realism." But Greg Changnon, writing fuse the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, praised Peace like a River as "a book full of wisdom service grace, a literary potboiler divagate celebrates the glory of faith." Michael Pearson, in another Atlanta Journal-Constitution review, expressed similar endorsement, stating that Enger's novel "has the power to convince become absent-minded, despite sorrow, human experience progression a miracle of ordinary unrestricted and extraordinary love." Katherine Dieckmann was less impressed, commenting direction the New York Times Exact Review that "Enger's world … seems unlikely to have cunning existed," though she thought, "he manages to infuse sections considerate this novel with some unexpectedly lively writing and deftly foul-mouthed sentences." Brad Hooper concluded put it to somebody another Booklist appraisal, "Enger's esoteric understanding of human nature stands behind his compelling prose."

Enger—in cooperation with his brother Lin Enger—has also published several mystery novels centering on the exploits clever a former baseball player. "Nobody really read them and they didn't get luxurious attention and we didn't role-play paid very much for them."
