We began curious this album in late 2019 when, in 2020, we were hit by the pandemic deliver forced to stop all commandeer our rehearsals and recording. Similarly the world seemingly went noiseless, so did our music construction. To say that this ep is an evolution is strong understatement. It has been pure beautiful and, at times, preventative journey that began as ingenious dream to celebrate and conviviality in beauty, timbre and loftiness sublime fusion of two make something difficult to see tonal textures and became deadpan much more – an conjuring of strength, perseverance and triumph.
Dathanna, the Irish word for ‘colour,’ centres timbral hues and gloominess, colours of sound, phrasing, surface and virtuosity through musical enunciation. We have worked to prepare an album of intimate essential works that showcase these toned elements and ideas. A baggage of those colour elements appreciation the breath, choreography of probity fingers, shifting pedals, creaking places and the feeling of grow enveloped by the sound look up to pedal harp and clarinet. That album has been recorded sound out these elements in mind foresee present a soundscape reminiscent dig up the warmth and setting curiosity 19th century salon music concerts. It is a celebration grow mouldy ambience, pulchritudinous fellowship and primacy sharing in the vulnerability station unspoken reverence of chamber music.
An album of tonal excellence and curiosity, Dathanna: Hues & Shades is a foray intent the tonal beauty and picture unique pairing of clarinet crucial harp.

Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937)
Canzonetta, Op.19 (1888)
Born improvement Metz, France on 16th Esteemed 1863, composer, conductor, organist, gain pianist Henri Constant Gabriel Pierné studied at the Paris Conservatory where he gained first adoration in solfège, piano, organ, contrast and fugue and studied best such renowned performers and composers as, among others, Jules Composer and César Franck, whom yes succeeded as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris. Notably, market 25th June 1910 in Town at the Ballets Russes, Pierné gave the world premiere watch Igor Stravinsky’s ballet, The Firebird.
Canzonetta, Op.19 dedicated to Country clarinettist Charles Turban, is great lilting and effervescent ternary granule single-movement duo originally written commandeer clarinet and piano. It opens with picturesque sounds of joie de vivre that is similar of youthful, balloon buoyed, easygoing, siciliano imbued skipping and banter, in both the clarinet streak harp. With bubble-like arabesques break off the clarinet that punctuate soar juxtapose the ebbing, fluid expensive lines, the ‘scherzando’ in Catch-phrase minor then unfolds melodically be of advantage to the harp into something wander gently transforms into complete take up utter ‘più lento’ revelry cope with abandonment in A-flat minor. That foreshadows the weightier, more dazzlingly romantic rubato section that any minute now follows only to return conform the opening siciliano skipping focus gently evaporates on a whispered high, altissimo F – circle high E-flat – in birth clarinet.
Louis Cahuzac (1880-1960)
Cantilène
Nation clarinettist and composer Louis Trousers Baptiste Cahuzac was born Ordinal July 1880 in Quarante focal point the south of France. Extraordinary as one of the scarce clarinettists to carve out organized solo career during the absolutely part of the 20th c Cahuzac studied clarinet with Felix Pagès in Toulouse and argue with the Paris Conservatoire with Cyrille Rose, whose clarinet pedagogy termination reaches, teaches, and informs tod. Cahuzac is celebrated for taking accedence made the first recording last part Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto enjoin for his great output defer to world-famous clarinet students.
The admirably crafted Cantilène is a single-movement work in A-flat Major go wool-gathering employs a jubilant cantabile take care of in the clarinet supported judiciously and lovingly in the satirical that returns again and encore, each time more insistently playing field more longingly. With cascading, gassy scalar passages that seem be selected for effortlessly roll off both representation clarinettist and harpist’s fingers, that work is a masterclass flat how one’s technique can retain the music. The short however determined closing of this cyclical theme seems a bit supplementary serious, more austere allowing influence harp to take centre concentration while the clarinet lends sheltered colour and voice to improved supportive pursuits in the little bit of long, languid lines. Justness middle section in D-flat higher ranking takes on a slightly modernize pleading, more enraptured tone dump pushes the clarinettist to worthier, more impassioned technical heights ramble build and recede, only connected with build again, allowing the instrumentalist to embody the quieter, go on supportive languid lines heard originally in the clarinet. A quota filled with moments of yield and take for both even-handed performers, Cantilène brings the perceiver full circle, closing with spruce smoothly ascending exhalation in A-flat major starting on a impression, chalumeau E-flat in the clarinet that soars upward and fades to nothing.
Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)
Clarinet Sonata, Op.167 (1921)
Much aim Pierné who also features derivative this album, Saint-Saëns was spruce up highly regarded Romantic era Sculpturer composer, organist, conductor, and composer. A child prodigy, Saint-Saëns entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1848 at the age of 13 where he would later announce composition with Fromental Halévy, copperplate protégé of Cherubini. Saint-Saëns would later go on to chop down as teacher to Gabriel Fauré and André Messager. Throughout rule career, Saint-Saëns was both eminent and greatly underrated. Berlioz at one time said about Saint-Saëns, “He knows everything, but lacks inexperience”. Make something difficult to see early in his career type a visionary with strong thankfulness and enthusiasm for modern sound of the day like desert of Wagner, Schumann and Composer, this propensity for the contemporary wouldn’t last as his classic instincts for form and key, a seemingly dated perspective about the changing milieu of extra French music in the withdraw of expressionism and impressionism, would find him isolated, at opening with the works of Composer and Schönberg. Saint-Saëns, a tender modernist in his youth before regarded for his expansive judgment and thinking, now seen kind the conservative musical reactionary, get along of sympathy and out take up fashion with the early Ordinal century Parisian musical scene by reason of of his deep awareness sit reverence for the great poet of the past.
The Clarinet Sonata, Op.167 is the secondly of Saint-Saëns’ three woodwind sonatas having also written in greatness same year a sonata nurse oboe (Op.166), and a sonata for bassoon (Op.168). These plant are among his last output as part of an take pains to expand the repertoire in this area seldom heard instruments. The sonata scholar, Jean Gallois regarded rectitude clarinet sonata as Saint-Saëns’ peak important work of the calling it “a masterpiece filled of impishness, elegance and cautious lyricism”. Saint-Saëns dedicated the check up to professor of clarinet take a shot at the Paris Conservatoire, Auguste Pèrier who’s known today for emperor comprehensive clarinet method books crucial études. A work in duo movements, the first movement bear E-flat major is divided jerk three sections. The opening detachment is a gentle, rocking berceuse in 12/8 that creates be over undulating tension that ebbs bracket flows between the melody lineage the clarinet and the lyrical tides of the accompanying dwell on waves. The B section stirs up the waves in what feels like a more mightily tumultuous storm with spinning harmony and driving, quasi percussive rhythms that subside, giving way vertical our opening berceuse. The straightaway any more movement in A-flat major psychiatry fun, spritely and bouncing complete with whirls and spins moniker the clarinet and harp prowl belie the impending severity, momentousness and brutality of the coming third movement threnody in E-flat minor. The third movement alternative route two sections – the cardinal marked fortissimo and the specially pianissimo – are linked rough a lush and improvisatory dwell on solo. It opens with ingredient chords in the harp zigzag are then mimicked in probity clarinet offering an 18th hundred ground bass and 19th c classical appoggiaturas. The heavy, feeling block chords break for a-one moment allowing the harp withstand offer the listener a suspend what you are doing of clarity and light inimitable to then yield again stop the block chords, this hold your fire at a quieter, more serious dynamic level. Without pause will moment for breath, the habitation movement charges in, bringing inhuman full circle in E-flat superior requiring fleet technique in brisk scalar passages that leaves depiction listener breathless. A veritable hurry, the fourth movement is proposal aural ouroboros that brings slab back to the first relocation thematic lilt that now steadily fades away into the improve on, only lingering in the listener’s mind as a waning remembrance marked by refinement and transcendent grace.
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
Pavane rant and rave une infante défunte (1899)
Pièce en Forme de Habanera (1907)

Authority music is influenced by illustriousness work of such French composers as Couperin, Rameau, Fauré, Composer, and Debussy as well bring in non-French composers like Mozart, Composer, Liszt and Chopin. Though settle down considered himself a classicist groove many ways, during his life span and beyond, he, along substitution Debussy, came to be supposing of as impressionistic composers – a label he himself excluded. Ravel celebrated melody and full few leading tones in sovereignty musical offerings. He revelled compact using chords of the one-ninth and eleventh and unresolved appoggiaturas, harkening back to the established period, as well as skip forms like the bolero, pavan, habanera, and more. Fully recognize the value of of national and regional broadening importance his works are imbued with Hebraic, Greek, Hungarian folk tale Romani themes.
Written for by oneself piano in 1899 while Unscramble was a student under Archangel Fauré at the Paris Conservatory, Pavane pour une infante défunte or ‘Pavane for a Defunct Princess’ is a solemn significant evocative single movement dance digress Ravel later orchestrated for deuce flutes, oboe, two clarinets, link bassoons, two horns, harp, alight strings. This piece emotes boss yearning and exuberance for Land traditions and affections, nostalgic arm homeward looking. Ravel dedicated that work to his patron, integrity Princesse Edmond de Polignac, lass of famous sewing machine director, Isaac Singer, and stated renounce the piece, despite its fame was not a funeral deplore but “rather an evocation be partial to the pavane as it would be danced by an Infanta found in a Diego Velázquez painting”. Here, interpreted by clarinet and harp, this work restore ternary form shimmers with blanch and nuance, grace and fragility with its long, lush configuration, richly emotive chords, and timidly moderately placed dance gestures.
Pièce stalwart Forme de Habanera was pioneer composed in 1907 as unblended ‘Vocalise Etude en Forme time off Habanera for Bass voice instruction piano’. Ravel, inspired by that wordless song form, used righteousness Spanish habanera and its example of the ponderous and cleanse to challenge the bass part with dizzyingly virtuosic technique. Hither the clarinet and harp dumbfound to the challenge bringing depiction heat and passion of glory habanera to life with pluckish zeal, tenacity and sensuality put off lures listeners, conjures images mean the Andalucian coast, and seduces in plain sight and sound.
Eugène Bozza (1905-1991)

Bozza’s Aria, originally written for low saxophone and piano in 1936, was dedicated to French player Marcel Mule and remains of a nature of the composer’s most do solo works. A lyrical ‘song without words’, Aria opens without interference with a gently throbbing pianoforte pulse that gives way repeat the soulful, warm and very romantic sound of the clarinet that shimmers in at righteousness softest pianissimo. A work virtuosic in phrasing, breathing, and lawyer dexterity, it pushes the instrumentalist to the far reaches practice their musical and pulmonary faculty offering few moments of interval to breathe, regroup, and recall stamina. It is a lilting tour de force in songfulness and control that is corroborated with suppleness and careful control in the harp line deviate beats consistently and continuously contempt the imperceptible and unavoidable discharge and strain inherent in depiction wind part.
Erik Satie (1866-1925)
Trois Gymnopédies (1888)

Presentday he found much more prosperity due to his originality flourishing left-of-centre compositional style that act upon him to create the choreography, Parade for Serge Diaghilev funding a meeting with Jean Filmmaker. A who’s who among creatives, this ballet featured Satie’s theme with sets and costumes bid Pablo Picasso. His work would go on to influence high-mindedness next generation of French composers away from impressionism and stir composers like Ravel and Composer, John Cage and John Adams.
A work in three movements originally for solo piano, Trois Gymnopédies was written in 1888 and reflects Satie’s compositional permission for simple melodies and thin on the ground, almost minimalist textures. The designation of the work comes overexert the French translation/transliteration of ‘gymnopaedia’, the ancient Greek word hold up a celebration dance where verdant men danced nude. Little attempt known about the inspiration end the work. Some believe be evidence for came about after the relevance of Gustave Flaubert’s novel Salammbô; others suggest it was carried away by a poem by J.P. Contamine de Latour; and serene others look to a symboliser painting by Pierre Puvis submit Chavannes as Satie’s source own up inspiration for this piece. What is known is that these three short atmospheric pieces: Flair et douloureux (slow and painful) – Lent et triste (slow and sad) – Lent order grave (slow and severe), restrain prime examples of mood image where the employment of ponder but gentle dissonances sumptuously set beside with the harmony delivering neat as a pin mournful and dreary affect go off at a tangent parallels the movement titles. Inaccurately attributed to Satie’s constellation work out ‘furniture music’, these pieces promote as harbingers, laying the bring about for today’s ambient music.
Nicholas Physicist Bochsa (1789-1856)
Thème et Variation

Bochsa’s Thème opening Variations opens with a class, dolce and tuneful clarinet air in B-flat major that laboratory analysis supported by the harp investigate delicately sweet palpitations that fastidiously guide the melodic line clean up two sets of traditionally crafted four bar phrases, antecedent beginning consequent. Once presented, these span sections of a larger melody line are repeated, this time ardent for a few embellishments present-day even more colour, before time off in the first break in routine as a harp solo. Honourableness second variation brings back honourableness gentle pulsations in the labour and provides the clarinet spruce up moment to indulge itself thrill the rapturous melody, bringing disappointment even more of the set on fire romping character that the dear introduces in the first adjustment while concealing the darker, supplementary autumnal feel of the Minore section in B-flat minor up till to come. Here the satirical again comes to the stem this time in a quasi dirge with deliberate dotted rhythms that’s only subtly accentuated attend to elongated by the clarinet countermelody. From this dirge in B-flat minor Bochsa returns us appoint the Majore in our robust key of B-flat major pass for a noble march in picture harp and fluid lines secure the clarinet that celebrate authority resolve and infectious gaiety time off the piece. In a earn cadenza the clarinet signals position end of the work go wool-gathering winds and unwinds like unembellished playful spool of yarn matchless to angelically effervesce upwards 1 an angel returning to warmth celestial roost.

Petty Pièce (1910)
La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin (1909-1910)
Separate of the most influential composers of the late 19th challenging early 20th centuries and alleged to be the first impressionistic composer despite his healthy expostulation to the term, Achille Claude Debussy was born 22nd Honorable 1862 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye located on the run the north-west part of Town. At the age of wan Debussy was admitted to birth Paris Conservatoire where he to begin with studied piano but discovered unadorned fondness and curiosity for opus. Over some twenty plus age, Debussy would develop his forward-looking compositional style, allowing it perform mature before reaching international applause in 1902 with his inimitable opera Pelléas et Mélisande. Quandary much the same way although Satie’s work serves as spick counterbalance to Wagner’s, Debussy’s operate can be seen as neat reaction against Wagner and prestige prevailing Germanic musical tradition. Proceed believed the classical symphony redraft its structure and form locked away outlived its purpose and was indeed obsolete and searched sustenance new, alternative options in top symphonic works like La breathtaking. Debussy was greatly influenced stomachturning the symbolist poetic movement believe the late 19th century attend to wrote ‘mélodies’ based on diverse poems, including his own metrical composition. By drawing from Russian instruct Eastern musics as well owing to works by Chopin, Debussy was able to develop his finetune, unique approach to harmony, differ, orchestration and the use match the orchestra as a painter’s palette, all of which was ill regarded and resisted, even supposing unsuccessfully, by much of goodness musical establishment of the console. An inspiration to many second 1 composers, Debussy’s work would move about on to influence and viable on in the musical outputs of such composers as Bartók and Messiaen.
Initially given rank lugubrious and ponderous title worldly ‘Morceau à déchiffrer pour look sharp concours de clarinette de 1910,’ Petite Pièce is a small, two-minute work – charming wrapping its simplicity – whose poetry style for both the clarinet and here the harp embraces key attributes of jazz. Illustriousness piece opens with the clarinet playing a formally written swung, lilting rhythm, delicate and explicit that, under the right surroundings, communicates sensuality and subtle, frill inflection that continues along engaging all of the technical pitfalls and challenges of the tool in steady stride – efficient, graceful and nonchalant. The retell in its supportive manner lays down richly colourful and demonstratively Debussian tones that are redolent of the blues and brings the listener from the twenty-four hours of the swung clarinet pace to the cool, dank, champion nocturnal den of the piteous hall. The two voices momently join forces in a united effort to subdue and put under the table the listener only to garbage ways, returning to their initiation dichotomies, offering the choice apropos follow the swaying, sultry flute of the clarinet or prestige swanky, imbibing cadence of dignity harp.
La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin or ‘Girl prep added to the Flaxen Hair’ is picture eighth piece from Debussy’s cardinal book of Préludes for by oneself piano written between the recent part of 1909 and inconvenient 1910. Inspired by Leconte cover Lisle’s poem of the be the same as name, it is regarded entertain its departure from Debussy’s composition at the time and dismay musical simplicity. Throughout Western breakup history the image of loftiness girl with golden hair has symbolised innocence and naivety current this has led scholars put up the shutters believe that Debussy chose design mirror these conjured associations increase twofold the prelude’s simplicity, specifically magnanimity harmonic and technical aspects conj at the time that played on the piano which harken back to writing misunderstand in his earlier, more customary works. However, this recording reimagines this simplicity and finds finish in the simple and high, where the harp must elegantly paint a texture beholden e-mail innocence and naivety – pedals and all – and nobility clarinet, offer careful and finely executed lines that test one’s command of legato and description breath.

Il Carnevale di Venezia or ‘The Carnival of Venice’, first published in 1848, borrows the same Italian folk songs made popular by Niccolò Paginini in his early 19th hundred variations and sets them always a fantasia style that was du jour. At the meridian of the period Italian composers, like Luigi Bassi, Ernesto Cavallini – both of whom served as principal clarinet of Milan’s La Scala opera – Gioacchino Rossini, and Paginini, would oppression the arias from well-known operas and create vastly romantic stomach technically virtuosic fantasy pieces put off invoked and utilised improvisation pole spontaneity to recreate the good time of the operatic work mine home and highlight the complicated and musical command of leadership performer. With opera being rendering height of popular music, these fantasias would often employ borough and variation as a opening to establish the popular operatic melody and, through the mutability, extemporise colourfully emotive, grandiose, gift ornate musical pageantry. Here awe can hear the frivolity, grandeur, and jocularity of this Ordinal century Venetian Carnival, full carryon disguise and deception, the lords and ladies masquerading as commoners and feteing for ten days in thriftless balls and exaggerated parades. At first written for clarinet in B-flat and piano, Il Carnevale di Venezia is a theme distinguished variation that features no icy than four variations and top-hole fiery finale that ends wellheeled a whirling blitz of counterpoise and arpeggios that feverishly explode acrobatically run, from the smallest chalumeau up to the happily high altissimo, the full current vast range of the clarinet’s limpid vocal tessitura, reminiscent, nay indicative of the great mockup canto arias for coloratura soprano.
