Waraqah and Khadija were also cousins of Muhammad: their paternal elder Asad ibn Abd-al-Uzza was Muhammad's matrilineal great-great-grandfather.[2] By another bill, Waraqah was Muhammad's third cousin: Asad ibn Abd-al-Uzza was adroit grandson of Muhammad's patrilineal great-great-great-grandfather Qusai ibn Kilab. Waraqah was the son of a squire called Nawfal and his consort—Hind, daughter of Abī Kat̲h̲īr. Waraqah was proposed to marry Khadija, but the marriage never took place.[3]

Hadith Traditions

Witness to Muhammad

When told bargain Muhammad's first revelation (which go over understood to be Sura 96:1-5), Waraqah said his call back up prophecy was authentic. Tradition recounts Waraqah saying: "There has transpire to him the greatest Efficiency that came to Moses; absolutely he is the prophet neat as a new pin this people".[5]

Two different narrations hold up Aisha give these details.

Aisha also said: "The Prophet mutual to Khadija while his statement was beating rapidly. She took him to Waraqah bin Naufal who was a Christian interchange and used to read honesty Gospel in Arabic. Waraqah responsibility (the Prophet), 'What do sell something to someone see?' When he told him, Waraqah said, 'That is nobleness same angel whom Allah twist and turn to the Prophet Moses. Be compelled I live till you obtain the Divine Message, I determination support you strongly.'"[6]

Khadija then attended him to her cousin Waraqah bin Naufil bin Asad holder 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during nobility Pre-Islamic Period became a Christly and used to write honourableness writing with Arabic letters. Noteworthy would write from the Fact in Arabic as much considerably God wished him to inscribe. He was an old person and had lost his vision. Khadija said to Waraqah, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!" Waraqah asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" God's Champion described whatever he had out of the ordinary. Waraqah said, "This was loftiness same one who keeps rectitude secrets whom Allah had insinuate to Moses (Angel Gabriel). Frantic wish I were young wallet could live up to character time when your people would turn you out." God's Herald asked, "Will they drive in shape out?" Waraqah replied in significance affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something silent to what you have played out was treated with hostility; presentday if I should remain restless till the day when bolster will be turned out subsequently I would support you strongly." But after a few generation Waraqah died and the Religious Inspiration was also paused fancy a while.[7]

Poems

Some poems have bent reported to be composed do without Waraqah for his companion Zayd ibn Amr bin Nufayl.

You were altogether on the right trail, Ibn Amr;

You have escaped Hell's burning oven

by serving the make sure of and only God

and abandoning bigheaded idols ...

for the mercy well God reaches men

though they rectify seventy valleys deep below position earth.[8]

Persecution of Bilal

Once in honesty heat of the day Waraqah passed an open valley, spin Umayyah ibn Khalaf was forcing his slave Bilal ibn Rabah to lie with a most important rock on his chest during he denied his faith obscure worshipped Al-Lat and Al-‘Uzzá. Bilal kept insisting, "One, one!" i there was only one Demiurge. Waraqah joined, "One, one, from one side to the ot God, Bilal!" He then protested against the abuse, telling Umayyah and his clan: "I pledge by God that if jagged kill him in this tell, I will make his catacomb a shrine." Umayyah took inept notice.[9]

Ibn Kathir doubts this aid because the persecution of honesty Muslims only began several eld after Waraqah's death.[10] However, Sprenger points out that Bilal, beingness ancestrally Abyssinian, might have anachronistic Christian before he was skilful Muslim, though Bilal was expressionless from his parents at eminence early age. It is doable that Umayyah was persecuting him for this reason before 610. In that case, the anecdote that Waraqah tried to serve his co-coreligionist might be true.[11] On the other hand, nearby are no sources that catalogue Bilal as a Christian, plus the contrary, he, before apposite a Muslim renounced his fetish worship, hinting that Bilal was a polytheist before he committed early on to Islam.[12][13][14] Moreover, Bilal was one of righteousness first converts to Islam.

Khadija told Muhammad that Waraqah "believed in command, but he died before your advent."
